Leaving Ashby around 8pm we arrived at Hulme End campsite at 9-30pm to put up tents whilst the younger group had called off in Ashbourne to collect Fish and Chips for us all. Tents completed, Fish and Chips etc eaten we settled for the night.
Saturday we were up early, had breakfast and packed up ready for our days hike. The tents remained up on site. The older scouts had to carry a tent and cooking equipment, plus their own day bag. The younger group carried a bag with waterproof, first aid kit and a change of clothes. The younger group were taken to Ilam to start the walk, the older group begin from Hulme End following map and compass direction, using grid references to find their way to Milldale were the younger group arrived and we had lunch (Pasty). We then set off using map etc. to Wetton, then over Sugar Loaf and back to Hulme End for about 5pm. We made tea, which were Pasta/ Super noodles and Swiss Roll and Custard. Games and chat took up the evening before we got in our tents for the night.
Sunday we packed everything up after breakfast and put the tents in the vehicles. We carried everything else on our day’s hike, which took us from Hulme End to Ecton Hill – Wetton – Thors Cave to Griddon were we had lunch including an ice cream. We then followed a cycle path, which took us uphill, past Throwley Hall and reaching the main road where the vehicles were parked to bring us back to Ashby, calling via McDonalds on route.
This was a really great weekend, enjoyed by all, the event should now go towards gaining our Challenge badges.
